Weapons are wieldable items that a player can use to inflict damage in combat. All players wield normal weapons in their right hand, and offhand weapons in their left hand. Two-handed weapons make it impossible for players to equip anything in their left hand (except through the use of a glitch, which is against the rules of RuneScape). In the case of thrown weapons, which are stackable, multiples of the same thrown weapon may be equipped in the weapon slot at once. A player may also equip a pickaxe or a woodcutting hatchet in the weapon slot so that they may hold more ore or logs, respectively.[1]Artwork of some standard RuneScape weapons.[2]Artwork of Silverlight from Issue 19 of the God Letters.{| class="toc" id="toc" style="border-color:rgb(192,176,150);" |

 [hide] *1 Basic Weapons

|}

Basic WeaponsEdit[]

These weapons are more commonly used than the other weapons available, because they do not degrade or break. Most types of basic weapons come in eight different kinds of metal.

Most weapons have a primary mode in all three styles and a secondary mode in the aggressive or controlled style. The secondary mode is normally weaker, but may be more appropriate to your target win.

Chainmail armour is weakest against stabbing attacks, platemail armour is weaker against crushing attacks, and players wearing cloth armour or no armour are most susceptible to slashing attacks. Against monster hide, the most effective style varies. Prior to the Evolution of Combat update, the prayer Protect from Melee (requires level 43 Prayer) nullified all incoming melee damage against most monsters, and a 40% damage reduction against players and certain monsters (including most bosses); however, it now offers a 50% damage reduction from melee attacks from all monsters and players while active.

Weapon groupsEdit[]

The whole idea of having multiple weapon types is that one weapon type should not be all-conquering, or there would not be much point of having the others. Overall, though, popular weapon types for each style are:

There are also a variety of 'novelty weapons' available. They do deal out very little, if any, damage.

The various groups of weapons are summarised below. Note that as of the Evolution of Combat, weapons of the same level (excluding Hatchets and Pickaxes, as their primary use is Skilling the Combative use would be need to be less) have approximately the same damage-per-second, with slower and two-handed weapons receiving a very slight bonus to damage-per-second between 2% and 6%.

Weapon   Speed   Type   Availability   Handedness  Notes
Dagger Fastest [3]Stab [4] [5] The fastest and generally the cheapest of all melee weapons. It is the first weapon that players can smith upon gaining access to a new metal.
Hatchet Fast [6]Slash [7] [8] Intended for Woodcutting. It is not recommended to use either Hatchets or Pickaxes as weapons, as their damage-per-second is halved relative to other weapons of their level.
Pickaxe Average [9]Stab [10] [11] Intended for Mining. It is not recommended to use either Hatchets or Pickaxes as weapons, as their damage-per-second is halved relative to other weapons of their level.
Sword Fast [12]Stab [13] [14] Able to hit higher than a dagger, but with slightly lower speed. It is not too commonly seen as a result.
Mace Fastest [15]Crush [16] [17] Equally fast as a dagger. However, maces are unique among other weapons of a given metal in that they carry a prayer bonus which makes them useful for those who make heavy use of Prayer.
Scimitar Fastest [18]Slash [19] [20] A very popular weapon that can hit just as fast as a mace or dagger. Scimitars are, however, generally more expensive than the dagger and do not carry the mace's prayer bonus.
Longsword Fast [21]Slash [22] [23] Slower than scimitars, maces, and daggers, but can deal the same damage per hit as a shortsword of the same metal type, except with slashing impact instead of stabbing. Although its speed is slightly slower than scimitars, its extra damage makes it as suitable as a scimitar.
Warhammer Average [24]Crush [25] [26] A powerful weapon that sacrifices speed for damage per hit. It is not commonly used because of its low speed.
Battleaxe Average [27]Slash [28] [29] Identical to a warhammer of the same metal type, except it causes slashing impact instead of crushing.
Two-handed sword Average [30]Slash [31] [32] One of the most powerful basic weapons, but it sacrifices both speed and the ability to be used with the offhand slot, as its name suggests. However, it can be used with two-handed abilities, many of which can cause large amounts of damage.
Halberd Average [33]Slash [34] [35] This two-handed members-only weapon is equally strong (and slow) as a two-handed sword. It has the unique ability to reach over small obstacles (such as tables, fences etc.)
Spear Average [36]Stab [37] [38] This two-handed members-only weapon is the stabbing equivalent of a two-handed sword.
Hasta Fast [39]Stab [40] [41] This weapon is identical to the shortsword in every way, except that it does not have offhand equivalents.
Claws Fastest [42]Slash [43] [44] members-only slashing weapon that is similar to the scimitar, but has an added bonus to MeleeCritical hit chance.
Maul Average [45]Crush [46] (insideDeamonheim

[47] (outside Deamonheim)

[48] These powerful two-handed weapons mainly appear inDaemonheim and follow a standard scale. Outside of Daemonheim, however, they do not follow the standard metal scale (Bronze-Dragon). You usually get them either in granite or obsidian. A new type is the Chaotic Maul, a reward from Dungeoneering.
Abyssal whip Fastest [49]Slash [50] [51] The coveted abyssal whip is essentially the equivalent of a level 70 scimitar, in that it hits low for its level, but quickly to compensate for the relatively low hits.
Rapier Fast [52]Stab [53] [54] Rapiers are primarily found in Daemonheim, though players can access other rapiers such as the Chaotic rapier outside of Daemonheim. They are identical to shortswords in every aspect.

[103]A player wielding a Dragon two-handed sword.(NEEDS IMPROVMENT/CONFIRMATION) The table above shows what level is needed to wield a certain metal and some specific weapons.

Weapons are made of different metals, some stronger and more expensive than others. Higher Attack levels allow wielding weapons of better metals. For example, a player needs an Attack level of 10 to wield Iron weapons, whereas the player would need level 30 to wield Mithril weapons. Almost all metal weapons can be smithed, except for Halberds, and any BlackWhiteDragon, or Barrowsweapons.

Weapons tableEdit[]

Notes for understanding the table:

  • There are off-hand versions of the Claws, Longswords, Scimitars, Maces, Battleaxes, and Warhammers.
  • If "Yes" is marked in the table, then the item exists. Consequently the item is marked "No" the item does not exist.
